What's Happening Now

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.


Traffic Pattern Changes

  • A new ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West will open to traffic on/about Thursday morning, August 25. The new ramp is located one-half mile south of the old exit ramp.  Details
  • On the night of August 18 crews began roadway striping and installation of flex post delineators on I-66 between Gainesville and Centreville as part of readying the new I-66 Express Lanes for opening. Details



Significant Upcoming Traffic Impacts

  • Beginning around 9 p.m. Friday, August 19, continuously through 5 a.m. Thursday, August 25, the left lane of I-66 East between Cedar Lane and I-495 will be closed. Details
  • Beginning at 10 p.m. August 19, continuously through 5 a.m. August 22, the ramp from I-66 East to Route 50 West will be closed for ramp reconstruction. Ramp closure is also planned August 26-29 for continued reconstruction. Details
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495, 495 Express Lanes, Route 50, Route 286, Route 28, and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road).


Current Construction Activities

  • Bridge beam installation for Express Lanes ramps at I-495 and Route 28
  • Traffic shifts to permanent general-purpose lanes on I-66 East and West in Fairfax County
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, Oakton, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations for Express Lanes access ramps along I-66 East and West at Route 28 and at I-495
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges at University Boulevard, Bull Run, Cub Run, and Compton Road
  • Bridge deck work for new Express Lanes access ramps along I-66 East and West, and new bridges at Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, and I-66 bridges at I-495
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed
